Kammerakademie Potsdam
2017/18 Season

A debut at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, successful tours throughout Europe, Asia and South America, and the 2015 ECHO Klassik prize in the "Ensemble/Orchestra of the Year" category for a recording of Franz Schubert's Symphonies Nos. 2 & 4 are just a few highlights of the Kammerakademie Potsdam's exciting development. A leading chamber orchestra in the state of Brandenburg and resident orchestra of Potsdam's Nikolaisaal, the Kammerakademie Potsdam impresses with the highest artistic quality, outstanding live performances, and both contemporary and historically-informed interpretations. Musically versatile and with a vibrant style of music-making, the orchestra offers a more wide-ranged programme than ever in 2017/18. Antonello Manacorda was appointed artistic director and principal conductor in the 2010/11 season; his predecessors include Sergio Azzolini, Andrea Marcon and Michael.

For the 2017/18 season, the Kammerakademie Potsdam focuses on Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's oeuvre, programming numerous concerts across various formats in a series subtitled "Felix im Glück" (Felix in luck). International soloists such as Igor Levit, Anna Vinnitskaya, Giuliano Carmignola, Arabella Steinbacher, Antoine Tamestit, Martin Grubinger, Avi Avital, Maria Bengtsson and Mahan Esfahani will join the orchestra. Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinettist of the Berlin Philharmonic, is this season's Artist in Residence and will be working with the Kammerakademie Potsdam for a number of concerts. Conductors Trevor Pinnock, Michael Sanderling and Attilio Cremonesi are welcomed back, whilst Giovanni Antonini, Christopher Moulds and Klaus Mäkelä will make their debuts. In a newly commissioned work by Helmut Oehring, "FinsterHERZ oder Orfeo17", the orchestra will explore topical issues such as escape, expulsion, home and communication in a quite unique way.

This year's Potsdamer Winteroper will once again take place in the unique and historic setting of the Friedenskirche Sanssouci, presenting "Elias", a staged oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. [...]

Having recorded a complete cycle of Schubert's symphonies, this season the Kammerakademie Potsdam is excited to complete the record of the symphonic output of Felix Mendelssohn, who had a close relationship with the Potsdamer Hof. The first two recordings of Mendelssohn's symphonies were received very positively by critics and the public alike. Furthermore, the orchestra released a recording of flute concertos by CPE Bach with Emmanuel Pahud and Trevor Pinnock (Warner Music), as well as with Andreas Ottensamer in his debut with DECCA featuring clarinet concertos by Stamitz, Danzi and Mozart.

The Kammerakademie Potsdam will continue to be a cultural ambassador for the city and will be making appearences at prestigious festivals and concert venues including the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Tonhalle Düsseldorf, Frauenkirche Dresden, Philharmonie Berlin, the Rheingau Musik Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Brandenburgische Sommerkonzerte. The orchestra's successful collaboration with the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg will continue into 2018.

Musical and cultural education has always been a vital part of the Kammerakademie Potsdam's work. A particularly special collaboration has been formed with the Drewitz Primary School, where the trio of orchestra, school and community centre, coined "Music Creates Perspectives", has created a unique and nationally-recognised model of cultural outreach. It has been awarded the coveted "Kultur öffnet Welten" prize by the Minister for Culture and Media.
